Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur, (popularly known as K.L.) is the cultural and economic center of Malaysia and is also the residence of the King. Founded in 1857, it is relatively young compared to other Malaysian cities. This becomes quite evident by seeing the modernity of the architecture and choice of accommodations in K.L. The airport, located 50 km away from the city, is an easy entry point with several major airlines flying to K.L. direct. Traveling around the city is almost hassle free with three separate rail transport systems linking all major spots in the city and the surrounding suburbs. Budget accommodation in K.L is mainly found in and around the Chinatown area, while mid-range and luxury K.L. hotels are located in the Golden Triangle area, which is filled with trendy shops, restaurants and entertainment. The city has a vibrant nightlife, with chic nightclubs and bars. The Golden Triangle, Bintang, and Heritage Row areas are the most popular places to find pulsating music and enticing cocktails. Kuala Lumpur has a wealth of restaurants, coffee shops and street carts.
